THE OBJECTIVE
Fifteen days off the marked routes. We move deep across the Sahara of Mauritania right a the border with the Sahel region, far from any conventional itinerary, out to the most isolated trans-Saharan caravan town in the country.
Hiking along some of the last active salt camel caravan in on of the harshest desert area of the entire Sahara. A journey defined entirely by boundless terrain, absolute silence, and ever-changing landscapes, navigated by an expert expedition team. Designed for those who prefer to travel light and push the boundaries of exploration.

/Aoukar
Deep within the hyper-arid expanses of southeastern Mauritania lie two of the Sahara’s most surreal and isolated geological marvels: the Aoukar depression and the towering Dhar Tichitt escarpment. Aoukar is a vast, dry basin stretching across thousands of square kilometers, characterized by endless seas of sand dunes, stark salt pans, and the fossilized shorelines of an ancient inland lake that create a forbidding yet mesmerizing prehistoric landscape. Not far from this sweeping dune sea lies Dhar Tichitt, known as the “Ghost of Yesterday’s Glory,” which is an isolated, semicircular sandstone cliff system situated right in the middle of the desert. Along this rugged escarpment lies a striking contrast of history and nature featuring the ancient, abandoned stone ruins of hundreds of prehistoric villages overlooking the barren sands, alongside hidden, palm-fringed oases where critically endangered addax antelopes thrive in absolute isolation.

/caravan towns
Deep within the remote expanses of the Mauritanian desert lie three of the Sahara’s most evocative and historically profound forgotten towns: Tichitt, Aoudaghost, and Ksar el Barka. Tichitt is an ancient, isolated stone-built settlement clinging to the base of a massive sandstone cliff, renowned for its exquisite dry-stone architecture, centuries-old mosques, and narrow alleyways that once hummed with trans-Saharan commerce. Not far away lie the sprawling ruins of Aoudaghost, a legendary medieval metropolis of the Ghana Empire that served as a bustling nexus where Mediterranean goods were exchanged for West African gold. Completing this triad is Ksar el Barka, a historic fortified caravanserai and Sufi theological sanctuary founded along the Tagant escarpment. Together, these deserted urban centers form a striking testament to human resilience, featuring intricate stone masonry, ancient Islamic scholarship, and silent courtyards that thrive in absolute isolation amid the endless sands.

MATMATA GUELTA

/gueltas
Scattered across the arid plateaus and rocky canyons of Mauritania are gueltas, vital desert oases and permanent water pools formed where underground water sources break through or rainwater collects in deep bedrock depressions. These hidden wetlands act as critical biological lifelines, breaking the monotony of the surrounding desert and drawing in nomadic herders, migratory birds, and desert wildlife. Among the most remarkable of these is the remote Guelta of Matmata, tucked deep within a rugged gorge of the Tagant Plateau. Matmata is globally renowned for harboring a surviving, isolated population of West African (Saharan) crocodiles. Descended from populations stranded thousands of years ago when the Sahara was a lush, green savanna, these resilient reptiles thrive in absolute seclusion within the guelta’s rocky pools, surrounded by towering canyon walls, scattered palms, and an otherwise unforgiving landscape.
